6 Slides To Sell Your Idea

Strategy To Story In 6 Slides

How to market your strategy so everyone gets it.

We do a lot of strategy projects for clients, all of which start with in-depth audience research and client performance analysis and ultimately deliver a unique content and product strategy.

Our slide decks hold a lot – key points on research, the strategy and its supporting messages, and operational considerations.

But there’s another deliverable we tend to build alongside our strategy documents, one that serves a different but vitally important role: A roadshow deck.

The roadshow deck helps our clients sell and explain the strategy internally. It’s shorter and more melodic – that is, it tells a story in a way that’s memorable and ideally seems obvious.

Our last one went something like this:

  • Our audience is going through a big change – name it and show research that supports it
  • We’re starting to adapt to this change, but not enough – show bright spots to give teams a boost, but end with the realistic stakes: without faster transformation, what happens?
  • Here’s what our future state looks like – dazzle with a future vision, aligned with what audiences want
  • Show how to get there – Details matter – what will we actually do to make the future state real?
  • Why it makes sense for us to do this – give reasons why your company is best positioned
  • Join me – finally, end with a call to action, identifying a specific task for the team you’re presenting to.

Anyone who has ever tried to pitch a new way of doing things knows it’s a tough internal sales job.

It takes a compelling story. And the roadshow deck is a highly effective way to tell it and get people on board with your vision.

The 3 milestones that actually matter in a project.

The 3 Milestones That Actually Matter in a Project I didn’t have a newsletter idea this week. Not because there’s nothing to talk about—there’s too much to talk about. We’re in the messy middle of a few projects right now. That stage where everything is technically in progress, but nothing feels finished. There are strategy docs, meeting notes, Slack threads, and stray links floating around—but not a lot of clarity. And yet, I’ve come to realize: there are only three milestones that actually...

Solve Their Problems, Steal Their AttentionYour content’s job is to work, not just perform. The content you create, in its best form, is a tool your audience uses to get something done. The first step is knowing what their problems are (here’s how to do that). The second is figuring out how to solve them with the assets and resources you have: 1. Pretend you’re a startup Your audience has jobs to do—internal conversations to prep for, reports to write, initiatives to defend, goals to hit. The...

Having trouble hammering down those nails?

We’re in the business of solving problems. How do we know what they are? If you want to build something that earns attention, you have to understand what your audience is struggling with. It’s the surest path to marketing success: Find a pain point, and solve it. Here’s how to find those pain points: 1. Talk to people. This is a surprisingly rare tactic in a world driven by digital metrics. But it will be the most illuminating part of your research, getting a human reaction, in words humans...
